Engagement communautaire
Engaging and supporting communities
A cornerstone of ATRAP’s approach is the active involvement of local communities through citizen science. This begins with careful selection of community members who are motivated, trusted, and rooted in our target study sites. We prioritise inclusivity and gender balance to ensure diverse representation and equitable participation. Once selected, citizen scientists undergo comprehensive training that equips them with the knowledge and skills to identify disease vectors, particularly freshwater snails that transmit schistosomiasis as well as to collect, record, and share relevant environmental data. Training sessions are both theoretical and hands-on. Lastly, to support participation, the citizen scientists are provided with essential tools and equipment, including: field kits for vector identification and sampling, smart mobile phones and protective gear like gumboots.
Raising awareness & inspiring action
Community-led awareness campaigns tailored to local contexts have helped shift behaviors and improve public health. These initiatives have reached over 15 communities and 50,000 people, educating on both schistosomiasis prevention and COVID-19 measures—many in collaboration with the Red Cross.
